ABOUT GUANA CAY

One of the best snorkeling opportunities in Abaco is situated at the north point of the Guana Cay, it is close enough that you can swim to it from the beach. There are beautiful coral formations and many colorful fish just east of that point. The settlement at Guana Cay census report from 1990 had 95 people living on the island. Guana Cay, like much of Abaco, has experienced a boom of late and presently has 150 permanent residents. The cays principal asset has long been its beautiful ocean beach, which is one of the widest in Abaco and extends almost the entire length of the island. Guana has been a popular stop for cruisers for many years and most essential services are available on the island. Start your day listening to the Cruiser's Net on VHF 68 at 8:15 am, here you will find weather, news and the lowdown on what is happening on Guana Cay and the rest of Abaco.

Dive Guana, operated by Troy & Maria Albury offers daily diving, snorkeling or sightseeing trips to the reefs and the cays. Dive Guana also rents boats, bikes and kayaks. As Troy says, "Come see Abaco from the bottom up..."

Guana Harbour Grocery store, run by Sylvon Bethel, is a well-stocked and well-run grocery store. Special orders may be arranged for you if you like; by placing your request by Wednesday afternoon, your order will arrive by late Thursday or Friday. Fig Tree Wine and Spirits is run by Johnnie Roberts. Nippers Beach Bar and Grill, which opened during the summer of 1996, has brought large numbers of cruisers, tourists and local residents to the cay. Nipper’s is a short walk from the settlement, high on a dune overlooking the beach and the reef. On Sundays, Nippers features a pig roast that has become world renown. The Blue Water Grill and Orchid Bay offer a great dining experience. Grabber's at Sunset Beach has a pool & beach bar that has casual meals and a wonderful potluck on Wednesday nights.

Emergency medical help can be obtain through Guana Fire & Rescue. There are clinics in Hopetown, Marsh Harbour, and Man O War; staffed with physicians & nurses. Other doctors living in the area may be able to provide assistance when needed.

A short boat ride away is Treasure Cay Vacation community where you will find world-class golfing, tennis & shopping.

The people of Abaco are friendly and helpful: they are gracious and generous hosts who will generally do their best to make your visit a pleasant one. Enjoy the beautiful waters, beaches, and people of Abaco, but please remember to respect the privacy of the Abaconians as well as the fragile physical environment, in order to save both for future generations.
