FAQ'S/WEATHER

How often do the ferries run?

Albury's Ferry Service has regularly scheduled trips from Marsh Harbour to Man-O-War Cay, Hope Town, Great Guana and Scotland Cays. Click here for the schedule. Guana Cay ferries depart from the Conch Inn, simply tell your taxi driver that you want the Guana Cay ferry, reservations are not required.

How do we find the cottage?

Our Caretaker, Frances, will meet you at the Guana Cay ferry dock. Frances will help you get settled in and lives just down the road should there be any problems.

Do we need to rent a car?

You cannot rent cars on Guana Cay, however you can rent Golf Carts. Coconuts Cottage is centrally located, a very short walk to the settlement, beaches and government dock. Should you wish to explore the ends of the island, a Golf Cart would be required, these can be rented through Donna Sands Golf Cart Rentals.

Do we need a passport to enter the Bahamas?

US visitors staying for eight months or less need a return ticket plus a passport (passports expired up to five years may also be used), or a certified birth certificate with an official photo identification; naturalized citizens require naturalization papers and photo identification; permanent residents (green card holders) require their green card and a valid passport from their place of birth. Canadian visitors not staying more than three weeks need the same identification as those from the US All others need a valid passport. Some visitors may also require a visa.
Note: As of January 2007 all air passengers entering the USA (even simply connecting to another country) require a valid passport. This includes American citizens and it also includes children of any age.

    Can I use American Dollars?

The legal tender is the Bahamian dollar (B$1), which is equivalent in value to the US dollar. Both US and Bahamian dollars are accepted interchangeably throughout the islands.

    What's the weather like?

The weather is typically moderate -- warmer than Florida in the winter and cooler in the summer.

What do I need to bring?

The cottage comes with a fully equipped kitchen (including blender!), linens, towels, toilet paper and garbage bags. We would suggest bringing your own beach towels. A hat and plenty of your favorite sunblock are necessities. Splash proof jackets can be useful for boating or rain showers. For long explorations on the beach, take Tevas or deck shoes, not flops, for navigating the coral patches.

We have found the following items useful:

Beach Towels
Camera
Back Pack
Cotton sweaters
Sunglasses
Snorkel Gear
Duffel w/strap to carry snorkel
Books, video tapes (VHS), CD's
If boating: Fishing equipment & hand-held VHF

Acquiring and reading the Cruising Guide to Abaco, by Steve Dodge is a worthwhile investment and provides great reference for your trip, particularly if you are going to do some boating.

Can we get married in the Bahamas?

Well Tammy and I did not get married in Abaco - but we honeymooned there - that is how it all started. We have also helped people organize Guana weddings.

You need to arrive in the Bahamas at least 24 hours prior to the ceremony. Bring birth certificates and photo IDs, and if you have been divorced also bring your final divorce decree (original or certified with raised seal). U.S. residents only are required to make a sworn declaration either at the U.S. Embassy in Nassau/Paradise Island (a $50 fee) or at the office of a Bahamian Notary Public (a $15 fee) if they have never been married. Other nationals (both parties) are required to bring sworn affidavits in English stating that the parties concerned were never married. No blood tests required. For more information, contact the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism's People-to-People/Weddings Department at 242-356-0435-8 or call the Registrar General's office at 242-322-3316.
